The teaching of accurate history representing the reality of America is being banned all across America. The history of marginalized groups including trials, tribulations, and triumphs is actively being suppressed to keep marginalized voices suppressed in the present.
State laws as well as district regulations seek to stifle the teaching capacity of educators. Unmasking America circumvents this using an Ethnic Studies curriculum designed to be taught by students, for students.
Students at schools where censorship is rampant are able to create clubs with the sole purpose of teaching Ethnic Studies. Unmasking America trains student leaders to deliver slideshows tailored to the needs of each school and facilitates discussion.
Over the 2022-2023 school year, Walla Walla High School, a school in southern Washington with a record of censoring literature and history, became the first school to beta Unmasking America. Though she faced opposition, Ava Kirtley established the Wahi Ethnic Studies club and succesfully taught previously censored history integral to eager students.
